Queer Cinema Club LIII: Querelle

On June 10, Paradise Book Club and Queer Cinema Club are clubbing up to present Fassbinder’s Querelle, which he adapted from the 1947 novel Querelle of Brest by Jean Genet.

Fassbinder’s final film before his death (and one we are screening on the literal anniversary of his death), Querelle is the provocative and erotic tale of the eponymous sailor, thief, and murderer, following his criminal and sexual exploits in the port town of Brest. Fassbinder’s stylishly staged interpretation of Genet’s novel brings dramatic life to the streets, brothels, prisons, and navy ships that form the backdrop of this landmark piece of queer literature.

Featuring an introduction by Kevin Greenspan of Paradise Book Club and Peter Knegt of Queer Cinema Club (and perhaps some other TBA guests), this will be quite the night.

Tickets are now available at paradiseonbloor.com and copies of Genet’s novel via Type Books are available here. The posters were created by the very talented Stephen Vincent Fiset, and will be available for purchase at the screenings.
